Suspect in Austin Shootings Charged with Terrorism

Terrorism charges are being filed against a 17-year-old in connection with the shootings of 13 people in the Austin area slightly more than a month ago.

Portions of Travis County were under shelter-in-place orders on May 17th after law enforcement officers were faced with a increasing number of shootings that day.

After someone fired a gun that damaged two Austin Fire Department stations, police received reports of apparently random gunfire, with 13 shootings and 6 other crimes reported.

In an arrest affidavit filed on Monday, suspect Cristian Mondragon is named as having waged terrorism in the community before being chased and captured that Sunday evening.

The shootings at the fire stations, though no one was injured, "is believed to have maximized public fear and disrupted emergency responses to the public,” according to Travis County court records.
