Texas Secretary Of State Jane Nelson Announces Plans To Depart Agency

Texas' highest ranking election officials is stepping down.

Secretary of State Jane Nelson on Tuesday announced she plans to step down from her role effective July 17th. She has served in the role for three and a half years.

Nelson said in a press release, "It has been an honor to serve the people of Texas in this role,” Secretary Nelson said. “My time as Secretary came at an important moment for Texas, and I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish as an agency in under four years.”

No reason was given for her departure.

Governor Greg Abbott, by state law, is required to nominate someone to fill the vacant position “without delay," but has not said who he will choose. Abbott did say about Nelson's departure, "Secretary Jane Nelson has been a true champion for the people of Texas and an extraordinary Secretary of State. I am deeply grateful for her long and loyal service and outstanding leadership.”
