NOAA is predicting a below average Atlantic Hurricane Season, which begins on June first.

On Thursday, forecasters said there was a 55% chance of a below average season. They are calling for between eight and fourteen named storms. Of those, they forecast between three and six hurricanes, and of those, between one and three major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).

This is in line with the Colorado State University forecast that was released in April, which called for a below average season with 12 named storms, six hurricanes, and two major storms.

For context, there were 13 named storms during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Out of those, 5 intensified into hurricanes, with 4 reaching major hurricane status.

The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1st.
