The business of surrogacy has been growing in recent decades, and for the most part, is has been a beneficial thing for Americans who cannot have children. Whatever the reason might be. It has become a multi-billion-dollar industry globally, worth over $14.9 billion to be exact, that has become international and fully commercialized. Especially when it comes to surrogacy contracts to gain U.S. birthright citizenship.
Stories have emerged in recent years and months of mothers being paid to have surrogate children, to then give birth to them in the United States. So, that child has American citizenship, then can sponsor their families for American citizenship when they turn 18 years old. It has become a critical loophole that needs sewing, but a Chinese billionaire has taken the idea to a new level.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Xu Bo, a founder and chairman of a mobile gaming company in China, has fathered over 100 surrogate children through American surrogates. That means multiple American women have entered a contract with a man, from a foreign enemy country, to have a child that will wield both Chinese and American citizenship.
Policy analyst for the Texas Public Policy Foundation Noah Torres says this has become a huge problem.
"Among American surrogates from 2014 to 2020...there were 40,000 embryo transfers, and about 32-percent of those transfers were for international intended parents," he says.
Of those in the statistic mentioned, over 1,000 of the intended parents were based in China. That is massive, considering Chinese students when travelling abroad are required to engage in espionage. It is another method for China to sink their teeth deeper into American roots.
It is also a huge contributor to our problematic birth rate. People having kids here then leaving, while Americans struggle to afford to start families, is a ruthless combination.
"Those were all American embryo used to birth children for foreign intended parents...these contracts are obviously exploitative, and these surrogacy networks, especially in places like China, we cannot be sure our best interests, or even the best interests of a child, are in the minds of the intended parents," says Torres.
The Supreme Court is currently considering ending birthright citizenship, which would be a massive win for the country. This system has become a boondoggle that has done nothing but take advantage of America and American citizens.
At some point as well, considering China is our main adversary, this becomes a national security risk.
"The fact is you have Americans contracting with individuals in different countries who might not have the best interests of the United States in mind," Torres says.
It has become yet another Achilles heel in the breakdown of American culture and identity. It has been taken advantage of now, to the point where a man has fathered two generations of children just to get citizenship.
It cannot last longer, and the fixing the problem lies in the Supreme Court's gavels.
