According to a recent report by ATTOM, a property data provider for realtors, property tax rates are skyrocketing across the United States. In 2025, property tax rates have risen an average of 5 percent across the United States.
While those federal numbers might be bad, the numbers here in the state of Texas are even worse, despite this being a top issue for Texas Republicans, who control the legislature and all statewide political offices.
James Quintero with the Texas Public Policy Foundation says, “In a five-year period, our collective property taxes have gone up 5.4% on average every year.”
As for why these prices keep rising, Quintero pointed to local governments like cities and independent school districts as the primary driver. “They’re enacting all sorts of progressive, DEI, climate change, and guaranteed income programs,” he said.
Those programs translate to massive spending, which Quintero says leads to more property taxes being levied against Texans.
He then went on to call for the state legislature to rein in these localities, or in some cases, abolish local government agencies altogether, saying: “Texas has the second-highest number of local governments anywhere in the U.S., behind Illinois. By virtue of how much government we have in this state, we can of course expect a greater property tax burden.”
