Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has begun an investigation into a group called the Islamic Tribunal, which might be operating Sharia law courts here in the State of Texas.
According to a press release from Paxton’s office, the group has been accused of making judicial rulings based on Sharia law and evading “neutral and generally applicable” state and federal laws.
The press release also claims that the Dallas-based entity has falsely claimed jurisdiction over “all aspects of Muslim life” and represented its decisions as final judgments approved by the Texas judicial system.
Paxton said in the statement: “If the Islamic Tribunal is undermining the rule of law or misleading Texans about the legal authority it claims to hold, my office will ensure its operation is shut down. This is America, and we will not be governed by Sharia law.”
