President Trump is doubling down, saying he is strongly considering withdrawing the U.S. from NATO.
Many who have watched the decline of NATO, and what it once stood for, understand why.
"The reality is, that NATO depends without a question, totally upon the U.S." said retired Army Lt. Col. Bob Maginnis, "And we typically have been paying for most of the freight, for going on 75 years."
That turns out to be roughly 62% of the NATO defense spending.
"I think every member has to be able to contribute teeth to the fight" Maginnis told KTRH, noting that while Trump has called for all 32 NATO members to pay their fair share of 5%, going back to 2014, only 3 were paying 2%.
"I think that President Trump's reservations about NATO are well founded, it needs to be renegotiated" noted Maginnis, "We don't need 32 members, much of which don't really account for any significant military power."
And yet too many of our European allies decided to abandon us, saying "it's not our war."
Maginnis says that NATO needs to be fixed, and it can. But all NATO members need to support each other, and the U.S. can't do it alone.
