Just like in California, Virginia Democrats are trying to gerrymander their congressional maps—but the RNC has filed a lawsuit to stop the referendum that would move the plan forward.
According to the RNC’s lawsuit, what Virginia Democrats are doing is actually quite different from other redistricting efforts we’ve seen around the country, because they’ve skipped over standard procedure.
Larry Ward with the Constitutional Rights PAC explained what Virginia Democrats are doing wrong, saying: “They have circumvented the state constitution. They’re supposed to only have one element in the bill, but they had multiple elements in the bill.”
He went on to say that not only is the RNC right to sue on this issue, but he also predicted they will win. “Virginia is going to not be redistricted in this particular 2026 election, and I do think that we’re going to win that,” Ward said.
Ward did warn, however, that Democrats are going to continue pushing attempts like this to take more power—and that’s exactly why Republicans in red states should continue their own legal redistricting efforts.
