According to a new study from the Council on Criminal Justice, U.S. murders may have plummeted by a full 21% during President Trump’s first year back in office. It may have even reached the lowest level recorded since the year 1900.

When asked why this massive drop in violent crime might be happening, former Houston Police Department Captain Dr. Greg Fremin pointed to a rejection of soft-on-crime politicians across the country—a trend that even police departments have become part of.

“This is a national trend, where you’ve seen collectively police departments push back on radical district attorneys and judges,” Dr. Fremin said. He says this has led to more offenders staying behind bars, which in turn prevents them from re-offending.

Fremin also said a rise in firearms ownership and the expansion of constitutional carry laws across the country have been a factor in all this as well. According to him, “Criminals—will they think twice before doing something, especially if that person exhibits a sign that they might be a concealed carrier? Absolutely.”

At the federal level, Fremin thinks the enhanced enforcement of immigration laws has played a role as well. He says Americans have had enough of the crime that comes from mass illegal immigration, and the pendulum on the issue has finally swung the other way.
