Missouri-born Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat who's been the elected representative in one Texas US Congressional district for nearly 3 years, now wants to be a US senator.
She told CNN she's considering a run against the winner of the state Republican primary, likely to be either incumbent John Cornyn or challenger Ken Paxton, the state's current attorney general.
When asked by a CNN anchor her plans for the race, Ms. Crockett said she's still considering running, "We are moving onto the next phase to determine whether or not this is, whether this would make sense in the moment, and if the infrastructure can be built out in a way that I can see that it may be necessary to actually be able to win, as well as we are continuing to look at the polling on the other side."
Although no Democrat has won a statewide election since 1994, Crockett says "we are doing really well against Paxton," should he win the Texas Republican primary against Cornyn.
And she says her campaign would be "within the margin of error with John Cornyn," meaning she's about 3- or 4-percent behind the incumbent in her office's in-house polls.
"So to be completely honest, the only reason I'm continuing to consider this run is because my polling tells me I can win. That is the bottom line. At the end of the day, a poll is a poll," Crockett said.
"So you actually need to be able to execute on that."
