President Trump met in the Oval Office with New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani. Despite Mamdani’s strong anti-Trump rhetoric on the campaign trail, the meeting appeared to go rather well.

Both Trump and Mamdani praised the productivity of the discussion in a subsequent press conference, with Trump going so as far as to say there was a lot the two agreed on. “We have one thing in common: we want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” Trump said during the remarks.

Trump also noted that one of the main focuses of their meeting was their disagreements on immigration enforcement, adding that they both want the city to be safe.

The press corps broke out in laughter after Mamdani was asked about his past inflammatory remarks about President Trump—specifically, whether he still believed Trump was a fascist. Before Mamdani could deliver a polished political answer, Trump interjected: “You can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining it. I don’t mind.”
