The drama at Texas A&M University continues. Former Professor Melissa McCoul, who was fired after her woke lectures were exposed by a student, is now claiming that she was wrongly terminated and that the termination violated her academic freedom.
This follows months of pushback against woke curriculum material in various Texas colleges. Texas taxpayers have been speaking out against public funds being used to promote ideologies like transgenderism and DEI.
State Representative Brian Harrison (R-HD10), who led the charge to have Professor McCoul removed, says Texans have a right to demand these ideologies be removed from public universities. “They’re funded by the taxpayers,” he explained, “so it’s the taxpayers who get to decide—through their government representatives—what is and is not being taught.”
Harrison went on to say that his constituents have made their thoughts on the matter clear. “Texans are fed up with being taxed out of their homes to fund the leftist, Marxist, progressive agenda and having their money used to indoctrinate students,” he said.
As far as academic freedom is concerned, Harrison says there are clear limits when taxpayer dollars are involved. “If you want to go study transgender studies or ‘women of hip-hop pushing back against the male gaze,’ knock yourself out,” he said. “But don’t do it with my constituents’ money.”
The Texas A&M Board of Regents is expected to vote on further restricting the teaching of these woke ideologies later this week.
