Harris County Commissioners are set to meet again today, and one of the items on the agenda is restrictions on panhandling in unincorporated Harris County.
It's being introduced by Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, the lone Republican.
"I'll be asking the County Attorney to draft an ordinance regulating panhandling and vending activities in Harris County" Ramsey said, "We don't need people standing in the middle of a roadway with buckets."
Ramsey says it's one of the top issues he hears from residents about, with precinct 3 featuring suburbs like Cypress, Spring and Atascocita.
"My primary concern is the safety risk with people standing in the medians, standing at busy intersections, and at some point there's going to be an accident" Ramsey told KTRH.
Earlier this year, Houston’s city council voted to approve a rule prohibiting sitting, standing and walking on median strips on divided roadways in city limits.
And even though Ramsey is the lone Republican on Harris County Commissioners Court, the resolution is expected to pass.
"I represent the majority of the unincorporated area of Harris County, I'm optimistic that we'll be able to get something done" noted Ramsey.
It's worth noting that a federal judge ruled that the city of Dallas should be allowed to enforce a similar ordinance, siding with the city’s arguments that such a measure ensures safety for pedestrians.
