After four years of record inflation under the Biden Administration, President Trump has suggested importing some beef from Argentina to help bring prices for consumers back down. The question is, is that really the best way to go about doing that?
Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller pointed out that this might not be a major game changer for beef prices, saying, "Argentine beef is inferior to U.S. beef. About the only thing we can do with it is make hamburgers out of it. We certainly aren't going to get high-quality steaks out of it." That means the only area where we'll see prices fall is burger patties.
Miller also pointed out that this wouldn't address the root cause of high beef prices, which is primarily the shortage of cattle in the United States. To solve that issue, he suggested, "Open up grazing lands that were shut down during the Biden Administration, so cattle producers will have a place to go with their cattle during a drought, and they won't have to sell them."
But that's not all. Miller also pushed for a per-head tax credit for ranchers, similar to the per-child tax credit that parents get. Miller also said that high-quality breeding cattle could be imported from Mexico and Canada to help increase the number of cattle here in the U.S.
