Watch Out For This Uber Scam!

Uber riders beware! There's a new scam that could result in a hack of your data, and all you have to do to avoid it is refuse to give out information.

The method of the deception makes it sound important, but the key to the scam is it isn't the driver's fault, it seems to come from the Uber app itself.

How it works: The driver picks up a rider but then is asked through the app to collect some information that would supposedly verify the driver's identity.

That's when the driver will ask the rider for an email address, phone number and the verification codes sent to the rider when he or she called for Uber service..

But if the rider and the driver turn in those codes to the app it somehow gives scammers access to the rider's payment information, including credit cards.

And that also makes it easy for the scammers to book free rides on Uber.

The company says on its website that it “will never call, text or email you to request your password, verification code, or banking details.”

One social media user reported the scam on her account and got an official response from Uber.

“Support Team here — this is concerning to hear. We are currently investigating and have escalated this to a specialized team for further review.”
