Common decency and civility have long been on a decline in the United States, especially so since the COVID-19 pandemic. Something flipped in people in 2020 where now, the room for civil discourse and basic human respect has gone out the window, mostly on the Left. If you disagree with anything they have to say, you are a Nazi, and there is no room to be moderate or logical.
As the Left continues getting more violent in 2025, politicians and media personalities alike have encouraged it. People like failed candidate Kamala Harris have said people need to "fight back" and have done nothing to condemn the political violence gripping the country. Perfect example: the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Not only did most Democrats not condemn it; they celebrated it. If that is not a signal as to how far-gone civility is, then you need glasses.
Now, the New York Time has a take that civility is a "fantasy," and that any civil discourse is a "distraction" from the real issues. All of it an absurd fabrication to push a ridiculous narrative, again, that anyone who disagrees with the liberal ideology is a fascist.
Dr. Cliff Porter of the Texas Public Policy Foundation says civility is part of basic human rights and also ties to the old adage "treat others as you would like to be treated."
"It is based on the individual and the respect for others...and you cannot expect to have rights from other people without actually reciprocating that," he says.
It is ironic as well that the Left, a party that preached love and empathy, is on the opposite side of the civility fence. You would think they would encourage it, considering how much they bellow about love, peace and all things fluffy. But they refuse to do that.
Why? Well, simply put, it is because it is a direct threat to their own platform.
"The reason they oppose it...with individual rights...is a hard barrier to enforcing their racist, socialist ideology," says Dr. Porter. "Their understanding of rights is that you have rights, as long as you agree with the overarching ideology."
In itself, that is an insane, selfish stance, and a complete bit of hypocrisy from a party that regularly bathes in it.
But that is just sadly what the party has become. A hypocritical, violent shell of its former self on a pathway to total irrelevance. The same goes for the New York Times and other media outlets doing the party's bidding.
