Governor Abbott Announces A New Public Safety Plan In Houston

Governor Greg Abbott was in Houston to announce a new public safety initiative that is aimed at reducing violent crime and enhancing protections for Texans.

The primary focus is targeting violent repeat offenders.

"Most violent crimes in the Houston area are committed by repeat offenders" Abbott said, "Today, we're putting those criminals on notice. We are coming for you, and we're going to target you."

Some local Democrats who have been against supporting law enforcement.

"Violent crime in Houston is down about 22% compared to last year, and murders are also down" Abbott said, "But, citizens in this area remain concerned about crime. Especially, violent crime."

Governor Abbott was joined by Texas DPS Colonel Freeman Martin, Houston Crime Stoppers Senior Director Sydney Zuiker, Houston Police Officers Union Executive Director Ray Hunt, and other state and local officials. But there were no Democrats, including Mayor John Whitmire who is out of town.

Houston was selected as the launch point for the initiative, but Abbott hopes to continue it statewide in the future.
