A government shutdown is underway after the Senate just voted down two competing funding proposals. The government will partially shutdown at midnight if no deal is reached.
U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement after Senate Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), once again voted against the clean short-term government funding bill passed by the House of Representatives, ensuring the first federal government shut down since 2018.
“Senate Democrats’ rejection of the House-passed, clean Continuing Resolution proves they’d rather shut the government down than work across the aisle for the benefit of the American people.”
“The Left’s progressive base and allies in the media have conjured up an ignorant illusion that they can force Republicans to accept their demands in exchange for keeping the lights on, but that could not be further from the truth. By not voting with us on a bipartisan basis to fund the government, Democrats have ensured that Border Patrol agents, military personnel, and hundreds of thousands of other federal employees could be forced to work without pay, which is unnecessary and shameful.”
“The American people resoundingly rejected the Democrat Party up and down the ballot last November, instead delivering President Trump and Congressional Republicans a historic mandate. It is time for Chuck Schumer to stop his temper tantrum, come to terms with this reality, and negotiate in good faith before any more harm is done to our country.”
“If they don’t change course, Democrats should expect to face the same failures come next November’s election.”
Yesterday, there was a big meeting between President Trump and Republican & Democrat congressional leaders, no deal was struck to avert a looming government shutdown.
The meeting lasted for about an hour, but according to reports neither side was willing to budge from their position.
Afterwards, Vice President JD Vance told reporters that a government shutdown is now likely, because Democrats are insisting on free health care for illegals."I think we're headed into a shutdown because the Democrats won't do the right thing" Vance said, "They're basically saying to the American people, we want to give hundreds of billions of dollars to illegal aliens for their health care, while Americans are struggling to pay for their health care bills. I hope they change their mind."
The clock is ticking, as Congress has until midnight to pass a short-term funding extension, or continuing resolution (CR), to avert a partial government shutdown.
The House already passed a funding extension, but the bill was blocked in the Senate earlier this month.
The shutdown would furlough tens of thousands of federal workers.
