California and their spiteful leader Governor Gavin Newsom have long been on a crusade against fossil fuels and American energy for some time now. California has taken what they believe are great strides at ending construction of new gas stations, banning gas powered cars, and generally demonized the oil and gas industry as a whole. When you add in regulatory red tape and fines, it has become untenable to do business in California.
So, many oil and gas companies have started fleeing the Golden State in droves. Just last year, Chevron moved right here to Texas, with a spokesperson saying they did so because California is a "tough place to do business." Now gas prices are surging in the state, and with eyes on a 2028 Presidential run, Governor Newsom is now pulling out hail Mary's from the playbook.
He has been making permitting promises, and begging companies to stay in California. Most because he knows that is gas prices creep anywhere near $10 a gallon in his state, he can kiss any hopes of political office goodbye. So, it is another selfish act of preservation from a con artist who cares more about his level of power than the lives of California citizen's.
Oil and gas expert Phil Flynn says years of Newsom's tirades against the oil industry have finally come home to roost.
"They got rid of fossil fuels, they got rid of cars...now, he has to change course because gas prices with his policies could go to $10/gallon," he says.
Newsom has already made his bed. He took big oil on head on and failed miserably in doing so. Now he needs them and their support in his pocket and rightfully so, they do not want to give it to him.
For years, Newsom has called industry leaders all sorts of terrible names, filed lawsuits, and called for them to be banned. That has eroded trust with the industry entirely, regardless of what promises he makes now.
"He demonized people in the industry, he sued them...now he is asking for them to help him out," Flynn says. "I know people in the industry...they are wondering if this will be a situation where he invited everyone in, then when they do the job...the governor just turns on them again."
That is the multi-billion-dollar question potentially. Is it some epiphany, and Newsom finally realizes his party's agenda is not good? Alas, most likely not. That would require soul searching on the part of a hard left Democrat.
It would not be a surprise to see Newsom flip flop, as he has done time and again on issues.
"The minute the industry solves the problem and gets prices back in line...I feel he is going to turn on them again," says Flynn.
Due to the mass exodus, California has been relying on foreign sources for its oil. It is all thanks to Newsom's failed energy policies. It is a grave he has dug himself, and there might not be a shovel to get himself out of it.
