There may be a job opening coming up soon in the Texas Legislature -- the man chosen for the job as the new chancellor of the Texas Tech University System is a state senator.
After current Chancellor Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell announced his plans for retirement in July 2023, a slow search began for his replacement, with the competition narrowing recently.
Two Republicans, Texas state Sen. Brandon Creighton (Conroe) and U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington (Lubbock) were announced as finalists.
Early Sunday, rumors spread that Sen. Creighton is the sole finalist for the job, with confirmation coming later in the day.
The Texas Tech Board System Chair Cody Campbell said in a Sunday statement, "After a lengthy, thorough and comprehensive search, I expect that the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents will unanimously name Senator Brandon Creighton as the Sole Finalist for our Chancellor of the Texas Tech University System."
And while Sen. Creighton has not publicly accepted the position, expectations are that he will take it, after which the would-be candidates for his state senator seat will start to line up.
Sen. Creighton, 55, has been Chairman of the Education Committee of the Senate and Chair of the Higher Education Subcommittee and brings a good background in academics and related subjects to the new position.
His District 4 Senate seat encompasses portions of Montgomery, Harris, Chambers, Jefferson, and Galveston counties
