The new national congressional maps for Texas have finally passed, kicking off what is expected to become a national redistricting war. Now some members of the Texas House GOP Caucus are calling for Republicans to go even further and redistrict the State House too.
Thirty-one members of the Texas House GOP Caucus signed on to a letter to Governor Abbott calling for more redistricting, saying, "Now that the second called session is underway, we would respectfully ask you to call a third special session and include the redistricting of Texas State House districts in that call."
Fort Bend County GOP Chair Bobby Eberle supported the idea of redistricting the Texas State House, saying, "It really does seem incomplete if we don't address the Texas House districts. Many of them are drawn the same way; they're gerrymandered based on race."
He also pointed out that this could be the perfect way to punish quorum-breaking Democrats, who so far still haven't faced major consequences. He explained, "They should have lost positions just for leaving the state, but if we can get them voted out of office, we should pursue that as well."
Eberle went on to encourage GOP state leaders to push this through as soon as possible, saying, "We've got the Democrats on their heels; they're feeling bad, they saw what we can do with the congressional map. Whether it happens in the third session or not, it's something we should embrace, and we should all support."
