Another Member of the Texas-Based Bush Family May Run for Office

At least one member of the Bush family is running for office, this time as a governor.

The patriarch of the clan is now former President George W. Bush, who lives in the Dallas area with wife Laura.

The family's political dynasty goes back more than 70 years to the 1952 election of Prescott Bush (George W.'s grandfather) as US Senator from Connecticut.

The most recent member of the family to run for office is George P. Bush, who was Land Commissioner of Texas from 2014 until 2023, when he lost a run for state attorney general to current AG Ken Paxton, who is now in a dead heat with incumbent John Cornyn for US senator from Texas.

Now New York City-born Jonathan Bush is testing the waters to run for office in Maine, but this is a different brand from the oil-and-gas beginnings of onetime President George "HW" Bush and his sons.

Jonathan, a cousin of George W. Bush and nephew of "HW", is a former co-founder of a Massachusetts health care technology company, and like other members of his family, earned an Ivy League degree: a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1997.

Jonathan recently had George W. and George's brother Jeb Bush to a small fundraiser for 56-year-old Jonathan, who's eyeing a run for Governor -- as a Republican in a state considered somewhat conservative but largely in the pocket of Democrats.

The Bush family has had ties to Maine for many decades, including the family compound at Kennebunkport -- a leisurely city just off I-95 south of the City of Portland -- which has been a retreat or summer home for members of the family for many years.

Maine's incumbent Democrat governor is term-limited out of running for office again, so Jonathan has said he's putting together an exploratory committee to look at a possible gubernatorial run.

He said in a statement recently that he has “made a career out of disrupting the status quo and delivering real results, including the creation of hundreds of good-paying jobs right here in Maine, and I know how important it is to have real leaders to drive real change.”
