Some of the money is now being cut off for Texas’ fugitive Democrat lawmakers.
Last night a Texas judge ruled former Congressman Beto O’Rourke and his group Powered by the People cannot pay for the expenses of Democrats from the state House who’ve fled the state.
The judge issued a temporary restraining order after Attorney General Ken Paxton accused the group of “unlawful fundraising practices.”
The funding has allegedly included plane tickets, hotels, logistics… and the fines the runaways have been ordered to pay for skipping out on their job.
In their attempt to stop the redrawing of the state’s congressional districts by majority Republicans, the Democrats have fled Austin, and the state of Texas, to California, Illinois and New York to keep the House from a quorum, the number of lawmakers necessary to do business.
In her decision, Tarrant County District Judge Megan Fahey said the group engages in “unlawful fundraising practices and utilization of political funds in a manner that either directly violates or causes Texas Democratic Legislators to violate [the law]… they are making political contributions that are being used to fund personal expenses and violate state law."
