Giving aid to Texas’ fugitive legislative Democrats could bring criminal charges for former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke.
The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton reports it is investigating O’Rourke and his political organization Powered By People.
In a statement, Paxton’s office says “Powered by People has been one of the top groups bankrolling the Texas House Democrat members who abandoned Texans and vacated their offices. By providing these liberal lawmakers with the funds to flee the state, Powered by People may have violated bribery laws.”
A former candidate for President, Governor and U.S. Senate, O’Rourke has been outspoken in his support for Democrats who have fled the legislature and left the state to deny state Republican lawmakers the needed quorum to consider redrawing the state’s congressional district maps.
Paxton’s statement declares that he “will take aggressive legal action against runaway Democrats who do not present themselves before the House by the Speaker’s deadline of Friday.”
Paxton has issued a “Request to Examine” demanding documents and communications from Powered by People, “regarding potentially unlawful activity, including its involvement in the Democrats’ scheme to break quorum.”
