The Texas plan to rearrange congressional districts to benefit Republicans is touching off a scramble across the country by Democrats to try their own redistricting plans in blue states.
Yesterday a Texas state House committee approved a redistricting proposal that could create five more Republican leaning congressional districts in the Lone Star State. Nationwide, that could help Republicans keep control of the U.S. House in next year’s midterm elections.
Now Democrats in states like California, New York and Illinois are considering their own remapping ideas. But that could be tough to do quickly in California where the process normally has to be approved by a special commission. It may not be possible in New York by next year because the state constitution keeps the process slower and more deliberate. It might be easier in Illinois, but its congressional districts are already overwhelmingly Democrat.
