Plans to rearrange Texas congressional district maps are moving forward in Austin.

A redistricting committee of the state house has approved a redistricting plan that heavily favors Republicans.

“A major win for grassroots activists who forced action!” declared Republican State Representative Brian Harrison in an X post. “The real test is next week… we must vote IMMEDIATELY… and Texas Republicans have all the power they need to do it!”

Texas has 38 seats in Congress, 25 of them are now held by Republicans. The new plan could create as many as five more districts likely to vote Republican.   The committee vote to okay the new districts was along party lines, 12 to 6.

Texas Democrats immediately responded with criticism “This vote is a profound act of contempt for the people of Texas,” said Representative Gene Wu of Houston, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

“It is a huge victory,” Harrison said on Steve Bannon’s War Room, “movement for the first time. I believe we have the votes to pass it.  One step forward today. The real battle will be next week.”
