Reports are now circulating that the Democrats are working on fundraising for yet another quorum break. This is all in an effort to block the Republicans' plan to redistrict the state and remove the racially segregated majority-minority congressional districts.
The proposed redistricting has been the subject of Democrats' ire since it was added to the special session agenda by Governor Greg Abbott, and they doubled down after the redistricting plan was officially announced yesterday.
Now Republicans are calling out the Democrats as being sore losers. Bexar County GOP Co-Chair Kyle Sinclair said of the plan, "It's a shame and weak leadership from the Democratic side. They're not allowing the democratic process to go through."
While this has garnered national media attention and support from other Democrats across the U.S., Sinclair says it likely won't play well here at home. According to him, "In the last election, we became a stronger conservative state, and so this type of behavior where you're whining and crying doesn't work in the State of Texas."
He went on to call on House Speaker Dustin Burrows to impose consequences on any Democrats who break quorum. There is already a $500 daily fine for quorum breakers, but Sinclair also suggested censures and removal of committee assignments for quorum breakers as well.
