That trip through airport security could soon come with another headache removed, worrying about your drink bottles, or your shampoo.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says her department is considering removing the restriction on containers of liquid in carry-on luggage.
“The day I walked in the door, I started questioning everything TSA does,” Noem said. “The liquids, I am questioning, so that may be the next big announcement, what size your liquids need to be.”
After the foiling of a plot, in which terrorists tried to smuggle explosive liquids onto airliners using drink bottles, travelers have been limited to only 3.4 ounces of liquid in their carry-ons.
“These were good procedures to put into place but we’re always fighting the last war, sadly,” said former airline pilot Matthew Buckley on Fox, “whether it’s in the Pentagon, the TSA, or most areas of government.”
The promised update to the drink rules comes after last week’s announcement that travelers will no longer be required to remove their shoes as they go through airport security, another rule that sprang from another terrorist plot, the unsuccessful attack by shoe bomber Rihard Reid in 2001.
“The technology improved. You can see the scanners and the sniffers and, if you’re walking around the airport, you’ll also see a lot of dogs too. They’re sniffing for explosives. So, our infrastructure has improved to allow these types of things.”
In her comments, Noem did not specify how the rules for liquids would be changed or updated.
