The start of the upcoming 'Special Session' for the Texas legislature is now less than 2 weeks away, and we now know that following the tragedy in Central Texas, flood relief is the top priority of Governor Greg Abbott's 18-item agenda.
"They've certainly shown that whenever something is a priority, they can get it done" said Brandon Waltens, senior editor at Texas Scorecard, "And so hopefully, they'll have the will do it."
Houston state senator Paul Bettencourt is already putting together a bill that would provide warning sirens in the area.
The Governor's agenda calls for flood warning systems, flood emergency communications, relief funding for the Hill County flood, and natural disaster preparation and recovery.
In addition to the flood response items, Abbott would like to see more property tax cuts. Other items include:
"A ban on taxpayer funded lobbying, and one of the big issues I think is redistricting" Waltens told KTRH, "Potentially redrawing some of the congressional map to help increase the Republican majority in Congress."
Also on the list is eliminating the STAAR test, protecting unborn children and human trafficking victims, protecting women's spaces, and water projects.
And don't forget the 'THC tussle' between Governor Abbott, and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, which will also be addressed, with Abbott asking lawmakers to protect children from THC, while regulating hemp-derived products.
The upcoming Special Session is set to begin at 12:00 PM on Monday, July 21.
