The last few days have been heartbreaking for many Texans after the July 4th floods that killed over one hundred people, including many children attending a Christian summer camp. While most are focused on recovery and rebuilding, some have different priorities.
There are individuals on the far left and in the mainstream media who are already hard at work trying to spin this into a political talking point for the Democratic Party. We've seen this disaster used to attack everyone from state legislators to Senator Ted Cruz and even President Trump.
The New York Times recently ran an article criticizing Cruz for being in Europe when the floods struck and for taking 72 hours to return home. The fact of the matter is, Cruz was on a pre-planned family trip and returned as soon as he could.
Political consultant Luke Macias pointed out what a silly talking point this is, saying, "What is the premise of this attack? Is it that a legislator isn't allowed to go on vacation in case a natural disaster happens? It's really an absurd talking point."
This, of course, follows the attempt by the far left to use this tragedy as grounds for bashing President Trump's budget bill and budget cuts, falsely claiming that these cuts led to a staffing shortage at the National Weather Service on the morning of July 4th.
Macias says this is simply business as usual for the far left, which has nothing else to run on. He pointed out the old Obama mantra of "Never let a good crisis go to waste" and says that's why the left steps in during tragic moments like this to attack political opponents.
He did add that the truth is, Texans aren't interested in this, and it won't play well for the Democrats if they turn it into a campaign issue. He said, "I wouldn't be surprised if some people try. I don't think it will become a big talking point because it's already falling flat on its face."
He added that this is a time for "being reminded of the pain and sting of death and the value of life. Most Texans are ignoring the noise."
