The next round of wrangling can now begin over president Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” budget and policy package in Congress.
The U.S. Senate version of the bill was unveiled Friday night and it differs from the House version in ways that will have to be reconciled, if it passes in the Senate. Some leading Republicans hoped for a vote of the full Senate late Saturday or Sunday.
Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson says now is a time for careful consideration, not haste. “The last thing I want Republicans to do is take the Nancy Pelosi approach and pass this bill to find what’s in it,” he told Fox News. “We need to know exactly what’s in it. There’s no need to rush it. We’re cleaning up the messes of Biden and the Democrats.”
Senators have been poring over the bill for about a month. Ten Senate committees have worked to adjust and amend it. House and Senate Republicans have been negotiating to find common ground on issues such as Medicaid reforms and how much taxpayers in high tax states can deduct from their federal taxes through the “SALT” deduction, when those in lower tax states get no such deduction.
Republican leaders say it’s still possible they can have the bill passed and ready to sign by President Trumps deadline of July 4, this coming Friday,
