Two men convicted in the 2022 smuggling case, which resulted in the deaths of 53 illegal aliens found in an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio, have been sentenced.
Felipe Orduna-Torres and Armando Gonzales-Ortega were previously convicted on federal charges, with prosecutors identifying Orduna-Torres as the leader of the smuggling operation and Gonzales-Ortega as his top assistant.
The immigrants, from countries such as Honduras and Mexico, paid up to $15,000 each to be smuggled into the United States.
Orduna-Torres received a double life sentence plus an additional 20 years, while Gonzales-Ortega was sentenced to over 87 years for his role in the tragedy.
