First Named Storm of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

The first storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has the name Andrea, but so far it's not a problem for the United States.

Its position hundreds of miles off the US east coast doesn't present a threat to the mainland.

In the earlier days of the hurricane season, such as June, weather conditions are not as favorable for the growth of tropical storms as they are later in the season, and that's one reason why Tropical Storm Andrea may not be around very long, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm is most notable for being the first of the season, but for little else: It's moving away from the eastern mainland USA and is predicted to head out to sea in the Atlantic over the next few days.

Off the US west coast, though, the Pacific hurricane season has been very active for so early in the season, which began May 15th, two weeks earlier than the Atlantic season.

The Pacific has seen five named storms off the west coast of Mexico since mid-May, a number that isn't usually reached until late July.
