MS-13 gang member and suspected human trafficker Kilmar Abrego Garcia is back in the U.S. to face criminal charges for allegedly transporting illegal immigrants within the U.S.
According to Attorney General Pam Bondi, "Abrego Garcia has landed in the United States to face justice," Bondi said. "A grand jury in the Middle District of Tennessee returned a sealed indictment charging him with alien smuggling and conspiracy."
Abrego Garcia, who is a Salvadoran native, had been living with his wife and children in Maryland, but was deported to El Salvador's CECOT maximum security prison in March.
A two-count indictment, which was filed under seal in federal court in Tennessee last month, alleged Abrego Garcia, 29, participated in a yearslong conspiracy to haul illegal immigrants, including suspected members of MS-13, from Texas to the interior of the country.
"He traded the innocence of minor children for profit," Bondi said. Children were among those allegedly trafficked. The indictment, filed under seal last month, includes two felony counts.
Pam Bondi thanked El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele for cooperating with the U.S. government and returning Garcia after the U.S. presented an arrest warrant. "This is what American justice looks like," she said.
