Governor Abbott Signs Public School Funding Bill

Another day, another bill for Governor Greg Abbott who signed House Bill 2, which will provide $8.5 billion in funding for public schools. The event was held at a public school in Salado.

"Texas should be number one in educating our children" Abbott said during the news conference, "House Bill 2 ensures that our schools are funded better than ever. Teacher pay and student funding are at all-time highs, reading and math performance is on an upward trajectory. And students will be better prepared for the workforce, than ever before."

It was just a month ago that Abbott signed into law the historic school choice legislation. About half of the funding, $4.2 billion is set for teacher and staff pay raises.

  • According to the breakdown, $2,500 for teachers with three to four years of experience.
  • $5,000 for teachers with five or more years of experience in districts with more than 5,000 students.
  • $4,000 for teachers for three to 4 years
  • $8,000 dollars for teachers with five more years of experience in districts with 5,000 or fewer students.
  • $500 million will go for support staff pay raises.

House Bill 2 will primarily go into effect at the beginning of September.
