The Texas Senate has officially passed a new funding measure for Texas public schools. The $8.5 billion package includes raises for teachers and was approved unanimously in the Senate.

The bill also expands the Teach Incentive allotment, a program designed to pay teachers based on performance, and provides $1.3 billion in funding for school districts’ overhead expenses.

The bill will now head back down to the House for approval before Governor Abbott can sign it. He’s indicated support for the bill due to the pay raises it includes for educators.

This comes just a few weeks after Abbott signed Texas’ new school choice program, which state Democrats claim will lead to the defunding of Texas’ public schools.
