Getting in one final shot before the U.S. Supreme Court sets things straight, a federal judge in San Francisco has blocked the Trump administration from terminating the legal status of foreign students nationwide. The decision comes as another court case challenging previous terminations is still pending.
U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White, a Bush appointee in Oakland has barred the government from arresting, incarcerating or moving students elsewhere based on their legal status until the other case is resolved.
In a minor win for Trump, at least for now, students can still be arrested for other reasons and their legal status can still be revoked if they are convicted of a violent crime carrying a prison term of more than a year.
After radical violent protests on college campuses went unchecked under the Biden-Harris administration, more than 4,700 international students had their permission to study in the U.S. canceled this spring, all a part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigrants and foreign nationals.
