The Texas House has given initial approval to a sweeping bail reform package long supported by the Governor, bringing key public safety measures closer to becoming law.
The main legislation, Senate Bill 9, passed by a 122-20 margin and would tighten restrictions on personal bonds, increase oversight of judges, and limit nonprofit bail funds. Govoner Greg Abbott has pushed hard for the reforms, calling the current system “broken”.
Lawmakers also advanced a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow judges to deny bail in serious felony cases if a defendant poses a public safety threat. The resolution, if approved by the Senate, will go before voters in November.
