After multiple lawmakers, including two Congresswomen and the Newark Mayor, tried invading an ICE detention facility in Newark this month, charges have been filed against one of them.
Freshman New Jersey Democrat Congresswoman LaMonica McIver has been charged over that incident, facing charges of assaulting law enforcement. Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey announced the charges on Monday evening.
Habba said McIver's conduct "cannot be overlooked," accusing her of assaulting, resisting, and impeding law enforcement.
McIver, along with another Congresswoman and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, were seen on video in a skirmish with law enforcement as they demanded entry to the facility. IN a surprising move, the charges against Baraka were dropped. She had originally faced similar charges after having to be removed from the facility by police.
McIver said in a statement she was performing her "lawful oversight responsibilities."
No other charges have been filed.
