Part of the basic American dream has been owning a house and having children. It has been the roots of the country for over 200 years. But in the last decade or so, economics have hit that dream hard. It is virtually unaffordable for young people to buy homes now. Along with that, the birth rate in the United States has been on a steady decline.
In fact, the U.S. birth rate hit new all-time lows in 2023. Just 3.6 million babies were born that year, and now, the average family has under two children. For years, that number on average was at least 2.5 children.
So, in an attempt to help reverse that trend, President Trump is mulling a new idea. He is reportedly considering a 'baby bonus' of $5,000 for new moms. Another part of the idea would also give 30 percent of all Fulbright scholarships be given to married applicants or those with children.
Katherine Hamilton of Breitbart says this idea might help reverse the trend, which has broader impacts.
"One problem is that less young people mean a lower working population, and therefore, a less productive economy," she says.
In 2023 as well, the total number of babies born was about 76,000 less than the year prior, which was the lowest one-year tally since 1979.
There is also a bit of a loneliness epidemic going around, where less people are getting married and having kids. That has hurt the numbers as well, and after a slight uptick during the pandemic, we are heading back the wrong direction. But this plan cannot hurt.
"It is a continues pattern we have seen...the birth rates have been declining by an average of two percent per year...and I do not see that stopping anytime soon," says Hamilton.
But it is not all just economics either. We have a new wave of culture in the country that is all about getting abortions, sleeping around, and staying single as long as possible.
"We have accessible birth control, we have economic and educational costs associated with having children," Hamilton says. "All of those things do drive lower birth rates in developed countries like the United States."
It is all part of President Trump's journey to Make America Great Again. Maybe the idea works, maybe it does not. But at least someone is trying something to reverse the declining U.S. birth rate.
