Border Czar Tom Homan wants to see more out of Congress when it comes to immigration policy.
Homan is calling for more deportations to be made at a quicker pace and longer detentions for families seeking asylum in the United States. Congress would have to make changes to immigration law that specifically raise the threshold for asylum claims at the border, allowing for the detention of families for 40 days and allowing for quicker removal of children from other nations.
While as a guest on NewsNation with Chris Cuomo, Homan said he hopes Congress will make these changes.
"They need to make changes, right? Because what concerns me is, every four years, a new president comes along, issue[s] brand-new executive orders to undo what the previous president did," he said. "I wish they’d settle this. Congress could fix three laws that would take 85% of the problem away from the border.”
Homan added that the government should move to detain families for 40 days “if you’re really escaping fear and persecution in your homeland."
"You shouldn’t have a problem sitting in an open-air family residential center for 40 days and have the judge hear your case," said Homan.
Even with a GOP majority, Congress is having a hard time doing much of anything. Homan sent out a message to members of Congress in a separate interview with Fox's Sean Hannity, asking for additional funding so they can continue the immigration plans of President Trump.
"They are elected by the people to represent the taxpayers of this country," Homan said. "When you don't care about your constituency, when you don't care about public safety and national security, you're an embarrassment to the position that you hold."
"The more money we have, the more we can do and the more agents we can put on the street, the more beds we can buy to put people in before we can deport them," Homan added. "We need Congress to fund this operation so we can keep President Trump's promise to the American people."
According to Homan, nine out of 10 people who apply for asylum do not get approved.
