Trump continues to work on bringing more manufacturing back to the United States. He should be focusing specifically on the manufacturing of medical equipment and medicine, which is primarily done in China. That could become a major problem for the United States in the future.
According to China expert and author Gordon Chang, the American medical industry has a roughly 90% dependency on China. He said, "Pharmaceutical ingredients, key starting materials, finished pharmaceuticals, or personal protective equipment, a lot of it comes from China."
Chang pointed out that with global tension on the rise, specifically with China, this could become a major issue. In fact, he says it already has. He pointed back to the COVID-19 pandemic saying, "In March of 2020, Chinese propaganda threatened to, 'throw the U.S. into a mighty sea of coronavirus.' China did prohibit exports of personal protective equipment to the U.S."
That's why Chang says bringing medical manufacturing back to the U.S. needs to be a top priority. But he did admit that it won't happen overnight, saying, "That requires not only tariffs, but also we need to provide things like tax credits, and tax breaks, just to get companies here."
Chang went as far as to say that America always needs to be ready for a full-scale war with China, and with most of our medical industry relying on Chinese manufacturing, it's safe to say we aren't ready right now.
