The House of Representatives signed off on a framework for President Trump’s so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" on Thursday. The bill is expected to include major policy priorities, including extending and expanding Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and securing the border once and for all.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) says this is a critical step toward making many of Trump’s top agenda items a reality. He told Fox News recently, "In this bill, we are going to cement so many of the promises we made on the campaign trail and check so many of the boxes of the America First Agenda."
The next step now is the long negotiation process, which Johnson says is critical to ensuring the bill has the unified Republican support needed to pass. He said, "We have to get the Senate Republicans and the House Republicans, virtually every single one of them, aligned to make sure that while we extend the tax cuts, we also pay for them."
He added that right now, his biggest priority is making sure that the American people do not experience the biggest tax increase of their lifetime. He says that’s what will happen if the 2017 tax cuts aren’t extended.
According to Johnson, the negotiations should last between five and six weeks, and the deadline for a deal is Memorial Day.
