Trump Tariffs Yielding Positive Results: Expert

The ride into an era of tariffs has been bumpy so far, but one expert says the results have been good so far, especially considering the complicated nature of international trade.

Europe is postponing its plans to bring tariffs against the United States; they'll begin in mid-April after a once-planned mid-March start, officials said, leaving what many believe to be plenty of time for negotiations between nations.

Part of the problem with tariffs is that when they're first introduced there's the initial shock of have to re-calculate market prices, but eventually those prices settle down, sometimes after just a few weeks.

This time around, it's no different, according to E. J. Antoni, a Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

"Trump's team is doing this actually very strategically, even though it may seem chaotic, so I think we need to trust them at the end of the day because so far the results have been good and I think the results will continue to be good."

And the results will include a greater understanding of market prices -- and of market power, he says.

"Victor Davis Hanson says, 'war is a laboratory where people have to figure out who is weak and who is strong,' but hopefully all these different nations will understand we're much stronger than they are, and so they won't want to go down the trade war route."
