Already facing a $250 million dollar deficit, a new report found that Houston ISD is currently operating 51 schools at under 50% capacity, and 81 schools under 75% capacity.
"The district is facing a huge budget deficit, and the current situation is not tenable" said Joseph Trimmer, who reported the story for Texas Scorecard.
One option that is being considered is consolidating some schools, as there are also 22 schools operating at over 120% capacity, with an additional 60 over 100% capacity.
"That is what will end up happening to a certain extent" Trimmer told KTRH, "I don't know how much money they'll end up saving. There are plans at potentially closing some schools."
One of the main reason all of this is happening is decreasing enrollment. As Trimmer notes, over the last 5 years, HISD has lost 30,000 students.
HISD Superintendent Mike Miles says "they're losing money".
