Following a long phone call on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to President Donald Trump's plan for a limited ceasefire amid the conflict in Ukraine.
The milestone agreement means Russia and Ukraine agree to stop targeting each other's energy infrastructure, such as refineries.
Negotiations are expected to begin right away in the Middle East.
It's not a broad agreement to cease hostilities but it's what the White House calls the beginning of a "process" toward peace that could eventually result in the end of fighting between the Russian Federation and Ukraine/NATO.
Also during the call, Putin told President Trump that Russia and Ukraine will be exchanging 175 prisoners of war on Wednesday, and in addition Russia will release 23 severely wounded Ukranian prisoners.
The phone call between the two leaders, said to have lasted about 90 minutes, included a discussion of details of what could possibly turn into a wider ceasefire, a decision to be reached later.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, the Trump administration said it's hoping that talks with Putin and perhaps other Russian officials will lead to a lasting peace.
“The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people,” it said i part.
There's been no word on whether Ukraine or its administration will be involved in the talks.
Putin also asked Trump to stop intelligence and weapons sharing with the Ukraine government.
A statement from the Putin administration praised the phone call between the two leaders as a “detailed and frank exchange of views”
