Following the lead of President Trump at the federal level, Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive requiring state employees working from home to return to the office. This is a long overdue first step towards making the state government more efficient.
State Rep. Briscoe Cain (R-District 128) says it's become clear that more oversight is needed with state employees. He said, "Remote work isn't for everybody. There are some jobs that can work for, but that needs to be determined on a basis of that exact job, that person, and whether that person can be accountable."
As expected, some state employees have pushed back against returning to the office. Cain says that's a symptom of simple entitlement. He said, "They've forgotten that they work for the taxpayers, the people. Right now there's a cultural shift, and they're being reminded of that at this moment. And we're seeing the same thing in D.C. They're being put back into their place."
According to Rep. Cain, some of these state employees are still demanding raises, despite the fact that they aren't returning to the office. He responded to that by saying, "No, they don't need raises if they don't want to come into the office; they need to be fired."
