Winter Weather Warning Issued for Houston, San Antonio, Austin

A Winter Weather Warning is in effect for Central and Southeast Texas, including Houston, San Antonio and Austin starting at 6 pm on Monday and continuing until 6 pm Tuesday.

The National Weather Service says there is a probability of snowfall reaching up to 5 inches in portions of the Houston area, especially in central city locations, with up to 3 inches in surrounding counties and up to 2 inches of snow expected in the San Antonio and Austin areas.

The agency is asking Texans to make preparations for cold weather today so that roads can stay as clear as possible beginning Monday evening, when the worst portions of a winter storm are expected to move through Central and then Southeast Texas.

There is a possibility of wind chills down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas, which could see winds up to 25 miles an hour, gusting up to 35 miles per hour.

The Weather Service advises that everyone delay travel plans on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday into Thursday because of icy road conditions.

In a note as part of it's warning, the Weather Service said "If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

"The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 800-452-9292 or by going to drivetexas.org.
