Democrat Impeachment Managers Wrap Up Their Case Against Donald Trump

Democrats will continue to make their case on the third day of the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. House impeachment managers will have eight hours to wrap up their arguments that Trump incited insurrection in the days leading up to January 6, when a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol building during a joint session of Congress.

During the first day of arguments, Democrats showed never-before-seen footage highlighting the chaos and carnage inside the building as the angry mob tore through the halls of Congress and put the lives of lawmakers and their staff members at risk. In one video, Utah Senator Mitt Romney narrowly avoided a confrontation with the mob. Some of the videos were graphic, showing Capitol police officers getting attacked by the crowd.

The impeachment managers also cited a speech that Trump gave hours before the Capitol protest turned violent. Pennsylvania Rep. Madeline Dean pointed out that while Trump only mentioned the word "peaceful" once when he addressed the crowd, he did use the word "fight" or "fighting" 20 times.

"In a speech spanning almost 11,000 words — yes, we did check — that was the one time, the only time, President Trump used the word peaceful or any suggestion of non-violence."

Democratic Delegate Stacey Plaskett, who represents the Virgin Islands, accused Trump of "orchestrating" and "inviting" the protesters to the Capitol, citing a moment during the presidential debate on September 29, in which he told the far-right group Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by."

Once the Democrats have finished making their arguments, Trump's legal team will be given 16 hours to defend the former president against the allegations.
