A high school principal in Louisiana is taking heat after telling female students she must approve their prom dress before they purchase it. Southwood High School Principal Dr. Kim Pendleton sent a text message to her students advising them to send her a picture of themselves in their prospective dress so she can decide if it adheres to the school's dress code.
"As you begin shopping for your attire, please make sure you do not purchase any clothes that are sheer or revealing in any manner. Also, make sure we do not see excess cleavage or skin," Pendleton wrote. "Prior to purchasing an outfit, I will need you to send me a picture of you in the outfit with your name and grade."
A copy of the message was posted on social media, where many parents blasted Pendleton for demanding that she must personally approve students' dresses. A few were supportive of the decision, including the grandfather of one of the girls.
"As a grandparent, I'm kind of from the old school, back in the day," Albert Bryant, told KTAL/KMSS. "I can understand because there are some young ladies that are raising themselves more or less, and they can get a little bit provocative."
The school district issued a statement saying they will host an assembly where students can voice their opinion on Pendleton's decision.
"In April, Southwood will host their annual prom and school administration has taken a proactive approach of asking parents for photos ahead of their upcoming event. It is a school-level decision for all formal dress to be approved prior to the event. Southwood will host an assembly for students only to address dress code guidelines and give an opportunity to raise questions and concerns."
